An Analysis of the Impact of Professional Training on the Performance of Teachers

-- Purna Prabhakar Nandamuri and K V Rao

The value of a nation depends on the quality of its citizens, which in turn depends on the excellence of their education system, and this eventually is an output of the quality of the teacher. The teacher is the signpost that determines the accomplishments and ambitions of a nation. Hence, it is essential to empower teachers to make the future of a nation secure. The demands and expectations with regard to the position of a teacher can be addressed by both induction as well as in-service training. The present study, which is an integral part of the doctoral dissertation “A Study of Management Practices of Secondary Schools”, attempts to understand the perceptions of the heads of the schools regarding the impact of in-service training programs on teacher performance at secondary level. The sample comprises 188 secondary schools—around 34% of the population—in Krishna district of the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, selected through stratified sampling technique. The primary data was secured through self-designed questionnaire and interview schedules. The statistical technique of Chi-square test and simple percentages were utilized to establish the consistency and understand the pattern of responses with the help of SPSS, version 19. The findings revealed that the in-service training for teachers has been a neglected activity in the educational administration. Many school heads perceived that the programs were of not much use in enhancing the teachers’ performance.

Vocabulary Conundrum: A Practical Approach

--Vitthal Gore

Research in English language teaching and learning has often underestimated the vocabulary resources of the language; therefore, the size of learners’ vocabulary and the rate of growth would not typically be thought of as general vocabulary which is essential to understand a text or verbal communication. General vocabulary includes proper names, words with multiple meanings, idioms, and compounds and derivatives, etc. whose meanings are not fully predictable from the meanings of their parts. The present paper suggests various strategies for vocabulary development with a practical approach. It is observed that the learners who are exposed to new words while reading have an average rate of vocabulary growth. In fact, growth is possible only when a learner learns a large number of words incidentally or contextually. By adopting the suggested strategies to learn and improve more number of words every day, a learner can improve receptive and productive vocabulary and make successful attempts to chuck out the vocabulary conundrum.

Effectiveness of Case Study in Life Skill Development: An Analysis

-- K B Sridevi

‘Instant’ is the mantra of everybody in this Internet era. The present-day organizations also want every resource in an instant, ready manner. It is no different with the human resource of any organization. They recruit and retain fresh management students—those who are ‘job ready’ from day one. Hence, the management educators have to vigorously apply the appropriate pedagogies to develop the skill set of their students. The case study is one such pedagogy which trains the students on live organizational situations. It exposes the learners to a specific situation and facilitates both the educators and learners to develop their managerial competence, decision making and their life skills. This depicts the importance of case studies in management education. While discussing the importance of case study, it becomes important to measure the effectiveness of its implementation in bringing out the expected outcomes. In this context, the researcher has attempted to measure the gap between the perceptions of the management faculties and the management students regarding their satisfaction towards the development of life skills of the learners through case study. Based on the review of literature, the study includes the effectiveness of case study in developing life skills, such as analytical skills, decision-making skills, application skills, oral communication skills, time-management skills, interpersonal or social skills, creative skills, written communication skills and self-analysis skills. The analysis reveals the prevalence of a gap between the level of satisfaction of the management faculties and that of the students towards the effectiveness of the case study in skill development among the students. Based on the findings, concrete suggestions are provided for the successful implementation of case study method.

This paper analyzes the development of this self-service banking in India based on the secondary data.

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is playing a very important role in the progress and advancement in almost all walks of life. The deregulated environment has provided an opportunity to restructure the means and methods of delivery of services in many areas, including the banking sector. The ICT has been a focused issue in the past two decades in Indian banking. In fact, ICTs are enabling the banks to change the way in which they are functioning. In a market-driven strategy of development, customer preference is of paramount importance in any economy. Gone are the days when customers used to come to the doorsteps of banks. Now the banks are required to chase the customers; only those banks which are customercentric and extremely focused on the needs of their clients can succeed in their business today.
